Dragon’s Dogma : Dark Arisen – An unexpected thrill

game,dragon,dogma

After hundreds of games played many of which were RPG’s I honestly thought that nothing can surprise me anymore, but boy oh boy am I glad I was wrong. Dragon’s dogma offered a fresh and fun experience I’ve hadn’t had since the Witcher 3. Now, it doesn’t really offer anything new or revolutionary to the genre, but it perfectly captures the essence of it, something this new generation of RPGs tends to lack (with the exception of a few).
So you’ve booted it up and have chosen the New Game option. You are immediately put into the shoes of a seasoned warrior, an Arisen. This part of the game works as a tutorial to show off the game mechanics. The last part of the tutorial features a boss fight with a Chimera. If the beautiful graphics and the way fights are done didn’t dazzle me, this battle did. It took time, adaption, tactics and patience to win this fight. After I’ve finished the boss fight and ended the tutorial I was astonished. It felt like a real boss battle, it’s hard to really put the feeling into words but imagine feeling something you haven’t felt in a while and suddenly feeling it all over again, almost like nostalgia. When a game makes you feel like that just from the tutorial it’s doing something right. So you’ve completed the tutorial and you are thrown right into a fight with a giant Dragon. All you have is a rusty sword, he completely destroys you and eats your heart. The character you’ve made minutes ago is lying on the ground without a heart. What a way to start our adventure. Shortly after that you wake up and the real game begins. It doesn’t take long for the typical RPG trope to take effect and your character comes to the realization that they are a warrior of prophecy destined to do this or kill that. The game boasts an open world with a day and night cycle. Night of course being more dangerous and featuring more monster encounters. The story itself isn’t by any means anything revolutionary or not before seen, it’s enjoyable and satisfying. The area where this game truly shines is the fighting mechanics and the way the boss battles are done. Every single one feels like an epic fight and a unique encounter. The class system is also a lot of fun, it has a lot of options and is awesome to explore it. You have 9 classes in total, you can switch between them at an inn and can, if you wish, unlock all abilities from every class. Your followers, called pawns also belong to one of the 9 classes. There is also a New Game + mode offering replayability. Weapons and armor are varied and upgradeable, along with the classes and pawns, there are really a lot of ways of going about the game. Ramp up the difficulty, ditch the pawns and you have yourself a Dark Souls level of challenge.Whatever your cup of tea, this game really offers something for everyone.
All in all, if you are looking for an RPG with a huge open world, an epic tale, enormous boss fights and all of that amazing RPG juice, this game is right up your alley. So, get the game, call in a sick weekend and dive into the amazing and immersive world of Dragon’s Dogma : Dark Arisen. Good luck and have fun ^.^
